Brianna Serrato

Junior Volunteer of the Year 2014

Congratulations to
Junior Volunteer of the Year
Brianna Serrato

This year we are recognizing a young woman who chose to put the plight of the Humane Society of Harlingen front and center.

Brianna approached Executive Director Kim Warunek with a plan to raise money to assist in the care of the animals that are constantly being abandoned at the shelter. She had read the article in the Valley Morning Star, which discussed the continuing struggle the Humane Society of Harlingen faces trying to keep the doors to the shelter open, and decided to make a difference.

Brianna Serrato was a Senior at Harlingen High School when she decided to take on this project. She approached her JROTC with an idea to collect money for the shelter by making a contest between the JROTC classes. She called the fundraiser “Pennies 4 Paws”.

After presenting the proposal to Harlingen High School, and receiving the authorization to proceed, she put her plan in motion. The JROTC classes were given the incentive of having a pizza party for the class that raised the most funds in the designated period of time. The competition was very well received and Brianna and her JROTC raised a grand total of $500.00!

To add to this, Brianna then approached Harlingen Family Dentistry with same fundraising idea. Harlingen Family Dentistry accepted her proposal and began collecting for the “Pennies 4 Paws” cause. On May 26th, 2014 the Humane Society of Harlingen was presented with an additional $500.00 raised by collections at Harlingen Family Dentistry. Our thanks go out to the JRTC and the Harlingen Family Dentistry for their efforts on this project.

To say Brianna Serrato is an exceptional person is an understatement. She has amazed us all with her determination to make a difference.

The Humane Society of Harlingen is very grateful for her selfless acts on behalf of all of the homeless animals in our care.
We wish Brianna continued success as she enters the next stage of her life and we know that with her outstanding personality and amazing compassion she will continue to make a positive impact on the world!
